Shona People, Zimbabwe- Bakwata sword and sheath- metal, wood, wire. Wooden scabbard daggers are found throughout Zimbabwe, and 16th century Portuguese travelers accounts describe them in use by that time. The scabbards are formed from two pieces of wood, bound together by wire, with the top side usually featuring geometric chip carving, and the back left plain except for an opening for attachment to a belt. The curved shape of the blade on this example is usual. 25 1/2'' Provenance: Paul B. Travis collection- Paul B. Travis brought this item back when he traveled through East Africa in 1928.
