Tutsi basket. Finely woven, peaked lidded baskets (ibeseki) were made by noble Tutsi women often in communal contexts, while men wove the large, more utilitarian types of baskets used for trapping , grain storage etc. Weavers had a variety of grasses and fibers at their disposal, but the fine gauge and tight weave of this example are hallmarks of the form. Unadorned examples are thought to originate in Twanda, while those with bold geometric patterning appear to have been favored in Burundi. 15 1/2"h Provenance: Paul B. Travis collection- Paul B. Travis brought this item back when he traveled through East Africa in 1928.
