Sickle sword, possibly Hutu people, Rwanda/ Burundi/ Democratic of Republic Congo. Fancifully-shaped blades are widely found in central Africa, where they were originally used as throwing knives. Over time, they took on ever more ornate shapes, losing their utility except as status items. Curved blades mounted on longer shafts, like this are sometimes called throwing knives. 17 5/8"l Provenance: Paul B. Travis collection- Paul B. Travis brought this item back when he traveled through East Africa in 1928.
