Sao/Lake Chad region- Terracotta equestrian figure- Culture(s) living in the Lake Chad region of what is today Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad have created figures in terracotta for nearly 2,000 years, but it was largely in the 12-13th centuries CE that they began producing large numbers of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures which appear to have been used in burial contexts. While many objects were collected in archaeological excavations, some political unrest created opportunities for the sites to be looted. The hornlike projection from the back of the fiture's head, the yeys indicated as a slit, and the prominent lips are hallmarks of works from this region. 7 1/2''
