Untitled

unique monotype with mixed media on paper, signed Sam Francis in pencil lower right, framed.  42 x 60"

Francis Archive - SFM86-250

Untitled is listed as a unique monotype and was documented with the Litho Shop identification number: SFM86-250. The mixed media materials include: woodcut (plywood), LeFranc and/or Windsor Newton oils, dry pigments, watercolors, and ink on handmade Sander's rag paper.

In 1972 Garner Tullis and his wife, Ann Tullis, founded the Institute of Experimental Printmaking in Santa Cruz, California. It became the Experimental Workshop (EXP) in 1976 when it was relocated to San Francisco. Garner Tullis left the company in 1982 and opened his own studio, Garner Tullis Workshop (GTW), in Emeryville, California and subsequently print studios in Santa Barbara, New York City and Urbino, Italy. The Experimental Workshop continued to be owned and run by Ann McLaughlin (formerly Tullis) and her husband, printer Will Foo.

Francis worked in collaboration with Garner Tullis for many years, creating hundreds of unique monotypes.

The Sam Francis Foundation classifies monotypes as “unique works on paper” and does not register monotypes in the limited edition prints category as each one is unique, even if some printmaking techniques might be employed.
