Ariel & Flounder  & Ursula The Sea Witch

2 hand-painted cels with background, both matted and framed.  10 x 15"; 10 x 12 3/4"

The animation sericels that are in this auction were done on a character basis. The gallery that sold these customized pieces based on your love of animated films  and interests. A companion background was added. These were done in the original animation production cells method. It took  24 hand drawn and colored images per second of screen time. The writing on the wall stated that hand done production work would soon be replaced by digital technology in the making of animation movies and shows. This has come to pass today. We now are moving to AI.

A line drawing was created per the character requested, then hand painted on  cellulose acetate,  which replaced celluloid material used in the first half of the 20th century. This endeavor was done as a last-ditch effort to exhibit what it took in time spent and care given to do one cell at a time and as a homage to the talent and commitment of the animators of the early classic animation series and films.  Most original production cells were not considered as art, were unstable as a medium, and  just a means of creating movement and most were destroyed. Most of these  recent sericels were then hand signed by the living  animators that were still alive at the time, mid 90’s,   (also known as the old men of animation). They are all gone now. The last one dying in 2003.

The pieces were professionally double matted in most cases with a fillet added, then framed with beautiful, contemporary frames as was befitting the respect and awe that these art pieces represent and deserve.

There are single standalone pieces from iconic animation films, romantic pairings, or the pairs of the  major protagonists in the story.
