Cartographer: Buache, Philippe (after Guillaume de L'Isle) Title: Carte de Moscovie (Map of Russia) Subject: Russia, Moscow, Ukraine, Lithuania Published: Paris: Li‚baux le fils Date: c. 1780 Description: Map of Russia produced during the reign of Catherine the Great. Centered on Moscow, the map shows political divisions with parts of the surrounding regions such as Lithuania, Ukraine, and the Caucasus. Aside from Moscow, other urban centers shown include Novgorod and Smolensk. The map is illustrated with copious manmade and geographic details such as roads, forests, mountain ranges, marshes, and lakes. Amongst the many rivers shown are the major arteries of the Volga and Dnieper. Old dated notations in the left-hand margin refer to the French invasion of Russia during the Napoleonic Wars and appear to be contemporary with the period. Dates and references to the cities of Smolensk, Valentina, and Moscow include dates relating to the French invasions of these cities. In addition to these notations, markings on the map itself in red ink near cities such as Smolensk and Moscow may indicate the positions of besieging French forces. These features together suggest that this particular copy may have been used for military planning purposes by Napoleon's Grand Arm‚e during his disastrous Russian invasion. Size: Approx. 19.25'' x 25.5'' (49.0 x 64.8 cm) Color: Hand-colored in outline. Condition: On map, center fold, with light toning and occasional markings in red ink; in margin, browning, soiling, occasional tearing and loss, with notations handwritten in pencil at left and top left; attached to an archival mat backing with adhesive mounts
