This meteorite fell about 50,000 years ago blasting out a crater 600 feet across, which is now nearly filled with sand and barely visible between the oil wells and bushes south of the highway near Odessa. Discovered in 1923, thousands of fragments have been collected over the years. When specimens are cut, polished and etched, the slices, exhibit a unique pattern of crystals called Widmanstatten figures.
