Ilse M. Bischoff- Study For US Air Mail Stamp- gouache and pen and ink on illustration board, signed Bischoff lower left. 17 1/2 x 13 31/2'' This work was commissioned by Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Work Projects Administration to create an essay for a projected airmail stamp in 1933. The essay was rejected by the commission, before it was ever presented to the US Postal Service, because it was felt to be 'shameless, brash and morally objectionable.
