Bound volume of 12 pen and ink on vellum checks, with ornate calligraphy, decorated borders, issued to Pope Leo XIII (1) and Pope Pius X (11).   These were issued by John Mc Grane from 1902-1909.  6 x9"

John J. McGrane (1850-1930), Papal Knight of St. Gregory, one of the first Catholic laymen to organize Catholic pilgrimages to Rome and the Holy Land.  

Mr. McGrane acted as adviser on American Catholic affairs to three successive Papal Secretaries of State, Cardinals Merry Del Val, de Sleti and Gasparri.  It was for his work in organizing Catholic pilgrimages to Rome that he was created a Papal Knight. He was also decorated by Popes Leo XIII, Pius X and Benedict XV.
