Sheriff St. Market Rosette

concrete architectural relief with painted highlights, ca. 1950.  29" dia  5" deep

The Sheriff St. Market opened in 1891 and operated as a market for 45 years until it was partly demolished due toa 1930 fire. Central Street Markets moved in to the remaining space in 149 and opened as the New Central Market in 1950.  The market operated for 44 years when it was torn down to make way for Progressive Field.

Frank L. Jiouch was a prominent Cleveland sculptor and wood carver who co-founded the firm Fisher & Jirouch in 1902.  His connection to the Sheriff Street Market and Cleveland Central Market cneters on the decorative architecutral relief work his firm performed for vaious major city structures.
