Akan Peoples, Ghana, Goldweights. Brass, 3 1/4'' (tallest)). Small cast bronze figurines were once used as counterweights for gold dust. The images depicted often had proverbial or cautionary references. Here, a seated female figure with a now headless child sits on a typical Akan stool, with two pictures using a mortar and pestle. In the second, a standing figure, in a strip-cloth wrapper, carries a staff in one hand, and bears an urn on her head.
